Financed by New Jersey Community Capital, Raza Development Fund and United States Department of Housing and Urban Development Home Funds made available by the City of Newark. In 2010, we completed a community growing garden on 13th Avenue built in partnership with, and supervised by The Greater Newark Conservancy. The growing garden incorporated design input from both the community and the students of the 13th Avenue School. Hardscape improvements of the garden, including a retaining wall, paver walkway and planting boxes, were built by the Greater Newark Conservancy and members of its re-entry training program. Students from the 13th Avenue School participated in a planting day and partner with the Greater Newark Conservancy in maintaining the planting boxes. The growing garden benefits from the a rainwater management system which collects rainwater from the roofs of adjacent homes in an underground tank that the students can later access via a foot pump to water the plants.
